Hiatus Kaiyote brings their new album Mood Valiant to NPR’s Tiny Desk with a kaleidoscopic five-song set.

Hiatus Kaiyote is the latest guest to grace a Tiny Desk stage. And they brought a few friends along for the ride.

For their weird, warm, and wonderful Tiny Desk debut, five tracks from the group’s new album, Mood Valiant, get lush live treatments against a kaleidoscopic backdrop with costumed players in the wings. The set opens with a tenderly warbled take on “Sip Into Something Soft.” After introducing the crew and dedicating the set to Australia’s indigenous populations, the playful bossa groove of “Rose Water” slips in. The group follows through with “And We Go Gentle.” From there, lead singer Nai Palm straps up with a six-string to perform the comeback-launching single “Get Sun,” before the group closes out with ascendant “Blood and Marrow.”

“I’m a treasure hunter at heart, and the beautiful thing about dressing a set with sentimental artifacts from my house is that I feel super comfy to perform,” says Nai of the performance in a statement via press release. “Simon came up with the color scheme and our dear friend Claudia helped bring it to life. All the costumes were handmade by friends in our community for the ‘Get Sun’ video and we decided to incorporate them last minute which makes it kinda like a fever dream, but super fun,” Nai adds.

The new Hiatus Kaiyote album, Mood Valiant, was released under Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder banner at the top of the summer, featuring multiple appearances from the legendary (and oft-sampled) Brazilian composer, Arthur Verocai.
