Binary Star recently dropped the double LP LIGHTY EARS APART. On the heel of its release, One Be Lo has put together a video for one of the standout tracks, “Saturn Rings Sad Turn Around.”
The video was shot at Amoeba Music in Hollywood and serves as an ode to digging in the crates.
“‘Saturn Rings Sad Turn Around’ is about how you fall in love with music and how it makes you think/feel good,” One Be Lo tells RealStreetRadio. “It can change your mood, and for some people, it can change lifestyles and tax brackets — really turn things around. Common said, ‘I used to love H.E.R.’ I still love H.E.R. (Holding Every Record).”
The veteran MC/producer also shared an anecdote about the song’s beat, which was created after an unexpected encounter while record shopping.
“I made this beat after record digging on my first trip to Australia,” he recalls. “It was a Wednesday we went to go record shopping. On our way walking, I saw a man sitting on a crate with a cardboard sign that said, ‘Lost brain, found music, need money.’ It caught my attention, so I said to the people I was with, ‘Hold on for a second.’ He didn’t look homeless but that day was a street performer hooking up a speaker to his MPC 500. While I stood there watching him set up, he looked up at me and said, ‘You’re One Be Lo ain’t you?’
“I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it! It caught me off guard because most people don’t even recognize me when I’m walking down the street in the country where I’m from [laughs] but here I am in Australia and some random guy on the street points me out. ‘I said, “Yeah that’s me!’ Then he said, ‘I have the album where you’re on the cover like this.’ It was S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M.”
