Washington, D.C. – Trailblazing comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory has passed away at the age 84. His son, Christian Gregory, posted the news to his father’s Facebook account on Saturday night (August 19). Although details are scarce, earlier this week, the elder Gregory had been hospitalized in Washington, D.C., which is where his earthly journey ended. The cause death was reportedly heart failure.

“It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, DC,” Christian wrote. “The family appreciates the outpouring support and love and respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time. More details will be released over the next few days.”

On Thursday (August 17), his family was optimistic he’d be going home. Christian took to Instagram to fer more insight into the situation and ask for “healing.”

“In advanced age a simple cold or a simple infection could be catastrophic,” the caption read. “At soon to be chronologically 85, my father’s true age far exceeds that. A life well-lived but heavily sacrificed, has definitively taken its toll. Laughter is truly good medicine. I’ve watched my father for a lifetime heal the world. Today he is need your healing.”

Sadly, he didn’t pull through.

Born in 1934, the Midwest native moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he started doing stand-up comedy in segregated comedy clubs. His wish was granted and his career exploded with success as a result.

During a time when America appears more divided than ever, the loss is particularly pround. HipHopDX reached out to several members the Hip Hop community to get their thoughts on Mr. Gregory’s legacy, including A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip, MC Lyte, Bun B, Chuck D, Just Blaze, Nick Grant and Styles P.

Just Blaze: “I didn’t understand his significance until I was much older, but he influenced one the greatest rap records all time. I just happened to have a part in it.”

David Banner: “Mr. Gregory was one the greats he can not be replaced. I don’t know what to say. Damn!”

Chuck D: “Dick Gregory! Came to my U Adelphi in 1984. Turned me out in speech. Did events with him. Fixed my sprained ankle. My Dad last words to me was about him.”

Nick Grant: “A necessary voice for people color. A very righteous person in which I learned a lot from through interviews and comedy. He gave a different perspective to very significant situations. He will truly be missed.”

Q-Tip: “RIP to the master teacher, the sage satirist that is Dick Gregory. Your art and introspection remains untethered. May your transition be light and wonderful. Thank you.”

Styles P: “Long live the legend. He may not be with us in the physical anymore, but energy never dies. The laughter and knowledge he delivered will be forever embedded in us.”

MC Lyte: “There was, is and never will be another like Mr. Dick Gregory. He was a courageous freedom fighter who held the torch for many generations, providing light and insight into the history this nation. He was absolutely fearless in his mission to inform and educate us all as he continued to fight for equality for all mankind. He was a source truth and I am deeply saddened by his passing. Mr. Gregory will forever be missed.”

Bun B: “Today is a sad day in the world. We’ve lost a warrior, teacher, gentleman, spokesman and life long fighter for the common good mankind. In this time racial division and separatist movement, we need the Dick Gregorys the world to show us how love and compassion rules over all. He will be missed.”

Spotify bids adieu to white supremacy

Three years ago, the Southern Poverty Law Center flagged a collection white-supremacist acts and racist “hate bands” on . In light recent events in Charlottesville, the US government’s response, and the release a Digital Music News’ story titled, “,” the streaming giant has promised to delete all associated acts.

A Spotify spokesperson recently told Billboard in a statement that, “illegal content or material that favors hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us.” Continuing, “Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention. We are glad to have been alerted to this content — and have already removed many the bands identified today, whilst urgently reviewing the remainder.”

With the news also comes the possibility a stricter review Spotify’s music library and its recommendations towards listeners on a larger scale, in the meantime blocking all hate-related content from its airwaves. In an effort to bring people together, Spotify’s also reportedly putting together a new playlist called “Patriotic Passion” delivering inclusionary tunes from the likes Jimi Hendrix, Lady Gaga, and Khalid.

Of course, in working to erase hate Spotify and all streaming platforms are placed in a difficult position in terms determining what is free speech. For example, a Spotify playlist currently under question is a collection Nazi marching band songs. While that is technically a “hate band,” one may argue Spotify should preserve it as a historical work.

While stopping the stream hate is a difficult feat it’s one that is indeed feasible with the right amount work.

50 Cent Casually Takes Responsibility For "Power" Leak

After receiving some positive news about Power’s ratings, executive producer 50 Cent took to Instagram on Wednesday (August 16) to celebrate the show’s success. In the caption, he seemingly fesses up to leaking three Power episodes as well.

“POWER Ratings up another 10 percent for episode 408,” he wrote. “They glad I leaked the shit now. LOL #SAVAGELIFE Now watch what I do on BET. #50Centralbet.”

Given 50 Cent’s tendency to joke around, his comment about leaking the episodes could’ve easily been his way  goading the people at STARZ. The Queens rap vet has yet to clarify any his statements.

50 first alluded to the leak on Sunday (August 13) when he wrote on Instagram, “STARZ thinks I leaked my own show.”

Although 50 may be joking, STARZ is taking the leak seriously. The network revealed its plans to launch a forensic investigation to nab the culprit and is fully prepared to take legal action against the person or persons responsible for the incident.

Teen Faces Criminal Charges For Playing XXXTENTACION's Music In Church

Brampton, Ontario – A 16-year-old Canadian is facing criminal charges after he hijacked a Brampton, Ontario church service by blaring XXXTENTACION’s “Look at Me!” through the church’s PA system.

According to the Brampton Guardian, parishioners felt “deeply threatened” when they heard lyrics such as “can’t keep my dick in my pants” and “she put her tongue on my dick.”

The unexpected interruption came just as a guest priest from Poland was about to read the gospel. At that moment, two youths reportedly went up to the lectern and started to blast the music.

Witnesses said the well-dressed young men entered through the side door and sat at the front the church.

Police were called to the scene immediately and churchgoers restrained one the young men until they arrived.

One woman told the Brampton Guardian that those in attendance “heard pranities blaring in the most sacred space they have.” Another told the local newspaper they considered the act a religious hate crime, though police have said they aren’t looking at it as one.

The teen has been charged with “mischief to religious property, disturbing a religious service and breach recognizance.”

OVO Sign In Toronto Sets Off New Restaurant Rumors For Drake

Drake might have fallen f Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for the first time in eight years this week, but you can’t keep a good Drizzy down, and the Canadian rhymer is already on to the next.

According to CBC News, Drake appears on the verge launching a new endeavor in the heart Toronto’s Financial District.

At the corner Yonge and Wellington Streets, a sign featuring Drake’s OVO owl has popped up outside a spot that previously housed a bar and grill. In addition to the OVO owl, the sign includes a logo that reads “Pick 6 Coming Soon.”

Although all signs point to Pick 6 being a restaurant (or sports bar, given the use the phrase “pick six” in football), there are still few clues on Drake’s latest venture.

Drake is already associated with a nearby restaurant called Fring’s, but this new one seems to be more clearly connected with his growing brand. He joins the list rappers who have ventured into the hospitality biz — T.I., Rick Ross, Ludacris and 2 Chainz are among the artists who currently or previously owned restaurants.
