Big K.R.I.T. on Alcoholism & Depression: “I Don’t Mind Telling People What I’ve Been Through”

On the second-half his newly-released double album, 4eva Is a Mighty Long Time, Big K.R.I.T., operating under his government name, Justin Scott, opens up about the alcoholism ("Drinking Sessions") and depression ("Price Fame") that he has battled over the past three years.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Mississippi native talked about why he felt comfortable baring his soul on the album and what he hopes it will accomplish:

"I think it was important that I talked about how it is when you don't feel good. When I'm dealing with anxiety or dealing with depression or the drinking. How I have these fears , 'Am I doing the right thing?' A record like 'Price Fame' – when you do get this success, how do you treat it or how do you let it treat you? How does it affect your family and friends and the people around you? … And I don't mind telling people what I've been through when it comes to the pressure I put on myself wanting to be the best and the greatest. There's nothing wrong with that, but a pressure comes with that, and you have to realize that if you don't want to run yourself into a space that you can't get out ."

K.R.I.T. is the latest rap artist to, either in song or interview form, open up about mental health, joining a list that includes Joe Budden, Dom McLennon BROCKHAMPTON, Joyner Lucas, Kamaiyah and more.

4eva Is a Mighty Long Time is currently on track to debut in the top five on the Billboard 200, which, for an independent release, would be an incredible accomplishment for K.R.I.T.
